Books to Read to Boys

PilgrimsProgressWe at male2Man had a recent request from one of our readers: “It would be great to see a list of books that you would recommend reading to young boys!”

So we’ve put together a list. But we need to make a few comments. This is not an exhaustive list. Some of the books mentioned are for older boys, and may not be age-appropriate for younger ears. While we consider ourselves to be relatively conservative, some parents may have tighter restrictions on what they read to their boys. Therefore, we want to encourage you to always do your “homework” before you allow your kids to read certain books or watch certain movies/TV shows.

Here’s what we came up with – in no particular order.

Title Author Note
Christian Heroes: Then and Now Janet & Geoff Benge
Any Men of Faith (Series of Biographies)
The Book of Virtues Bill Bennett
The Children Book of Heroes Bill Benett
Pilgrim’s Progress (Children’s Version) John Bunyan
The Chronicles of Narnia C.S. Lewis
The Adam Racoon Series Glen Keane
Financial Peace, Jr. “Teaching Kids to Win with Money” Dave Ramsey
The Lord of the Rings series J.R.R. Tolkien Older Boys
Jesus Freaks Older Boys
The Bronze Bow Elizabeth George Speare
A Wrinkle in Time Madeleine L’ Engle
God’s Little Devotional Book for Boys David C. Cook
The Big Book of People, Places and Things Phil Smouse
The Westminster Shorter Catechism for Kids. Book 1 and 2 Vic Lockman

A final note: There are some authors and series that we would also encourage you to consider. GA Henty was an excellent writer and his books are very popular for boys. Thom and Art Rainer just finished a book titled, Raising Dad: What Father and Sons Learn From Each OtherRaising a Modern Day Knight, by Robert Lewis, is an excellent book for fathers of boys. Lewis recommends reading Louis L’Amour books to your boys. The Newbery Medal is an award in American literature for children. Many people like these books.

Our final encouragement and our favorite book to read to our kids is the BIBLE. It is the ultimate authority and there is no better book than the Holy Scriptures.

The Chronicles Of Narnia The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe
